Day 7: What You’re Aware of You Can Address

by Jan 7, 2021HOAM Insights, Life0 comments

Ouch! I did it again!

This morning as I was reading my vision statements I saw in my “2 Things I Don’t Do” section:

“I don’t negatively of others.”

Immediately, I remembered that just 30 minutes earlier I was bad-mouthing a national leader! Oh man! I’ve got work to do!

I imagined hearing my daughter with intellectual disabilities saying to me, “Really, Dad? Really?”

Yep, I’d failed yet again to be the man I really want to be.

The Good News

This bad habit is so “front and center” in my mind I can address it.

I’m afraid if I weren’t reading my vision statements I would continue to have this glaring blind spot.

But I’m not blind to it anymore.

And even though I don’t like the truth about me in this moment. I am thankful for the awareness.

Two Firsts

Today I completed two tasks that I’ve never completed before in my life—even though I’ve wanted to.

First, I created a Trello Board for daily and weekly behaviors I want to act on repeatedly.

I also realized that I need to create a Trello Board for myself as a business professional. That’s been added to my secondary tasks for today.

If you don’t utilize a project management platform, like Trello, I hope this inspires you to start.

  • I love Trello because it’s free for starters.
  • It’s intuitive.
  • It’s user-friendly.
  • It creates systems to help me get things done.

James Clear, in Atomic Habits, points out that systems > goals in enabling habit formation.

With Trello I’m finding that out. Thank you, James Clear. And thank you Trello!

Second, I got my 2021 calendar in shape to serve me, rather than hurt me.

Because I’m living as a Hero On A Mission (HOAM) I’ve been reviewing three 90-day goals repeatedly.

This action has caused me to become aware of my need to improve my calendar management.

I’m a Business and Leadership Coach. In order to make my life easier I want to work with clients on a regular basis.

For example, “I will coach Client A on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month at 1:00 pm.” Consistency like this helps everyone.

But occasionally, there’s a 5th Monday of a month. Or 5th Tuesday. Etc.

I realized that those 5ths are a perfect time to take vacations days. Or time to work on my business instead of in my business.

That means I need to protect those days for that purpose.

Today I did just that!

It was so liberating and freeing. It creates so much flexibility for my life.

It will also help me reduce administrative work when I want to take a vacation; or take a day to work on a book; or work on a big project without interruption.

I love seeing these steps of progress in my life and work.
